  • One of the activities that define organisms is that at some point in their life, or throughout it, they grow. Growth requires the acquisition of matter and both the acquisition of matter and the incorporation of this material into a living form (i.e., into biomolecules) involves energy. Both matter and energy are needed but it is important to keep in mind that they are two distinct entities that are NOT interconvertible. The energy transformations that organisms carry out involve manipulations of matter but they DO NOT involve converting matter into energy. Energy is obtained by rearranging matter, mostly by converting carbohydrates and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. What complicates understanding is that matter is needed in two ways (Fig. 1): (1) materially, providing the materials that become part of the organism, mostly carbohydrates or carbohydrate derivatives, (2) energetically, because energy can be made available as matter is rearranged, e.g., converting carbohydrates and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water. Although matter is being rearranged, it is not being transformed into energy.

FAQs

What is the sum total of the phenomenon exhibited by an organisms? ›

Metabolism

The sum total of the biochemical reactions occurring in an organism is called its metabolism. Metabolism can be subdivided into anabolism and catabolism. In anabolism, organisms make complex molecules from simpler ones, while in catabolism, they do the reverse.

What is the phenomenon of chemical activity in an organism called? ›

The living cell is the site of tremendous biochemical activity called metabolism. This is the process of chemical and physical change which goes on continually in the living organism.

What is the total of all the chemical reactions in an organism? ›

The total of all chemical reactions in an organism is called metabolism. This includes catabolic and anabolic reactions.

What are living organisms made up of short answer? ›

Living organisms are made up of cells. Cells are the structural and functional units of all living organisms. In 1665, Robert Hooke discovered the existence of cells using a microscope, which further paved the way for the discovery of various other microscopic organisms.

What is the sum total of all living and nonliving things that affect any living organism? ›

Environment: The environment can be defined as a sum total of all the living and non-living elements and their effects that influence human life. While all living or biotic elements are animals, plants, forests, fisheries, and birds, non-living or abiotic elements include water, land, sunlight, rocks, and air.

What is the sum total of all processes in an organism which break down chemicals to produce energy and simple chemical building blocks? ›

Catabolism. Catabolism is the set of metabolic processes that break down large molecules. These include breaking down and oxidizing food molecules. The purpose of the catabolic reactions is to provide the energy and components needed by anabolic reactions which build molecules.

What is the sum of all chemical reactions in an organism called quizlet? ›

The sum of all chemical reactions within a living organism is known as metabolism. Anabolism refers to chemical reactions in which simpler substances are combined to form more complex molecules.

What is the sum total of all chemical reactions that occur in organisms called quizlet? ›

Metabolism refers to the sum of all chemical reactions that occur within an organism.

What is the sum of all biochemical reactions in a cell called quizlet? ›

Metabolism is the sum of all biochemical reactions in an organism.

What are the bodies of all living organisms made of which can be seen under a microscope? ›

All living things are made of cells. Biology is the science that studies life, and a central principle of Biology is that the cell is the basic unit of life. This means that all living organisms are made of cells.

What is a living organism called? ›

Organism (biology definition): a living thing that has an organized structure, can react to stimuli, reproduce, grow, adapt, and maintain homeostasis. Etymology: the term organism comes from the Greek organon, meaning “instrument”. Synonyms: life form; living being; living thing. Also see: life, prokaryote, eukaryote.

Are all living organisms composed of cells and products of cells? ›

Yes, all living things are made up of cells. In 1665, Robert Hooke discovered the existence of cells using a microscope, which further paved the way for the discovery of various other microscopic organisms. Some organisms consist of a single cell, for example, the amoeba.

Is the total of all the chemical reactions an organism needs to survive the process of chemical digestion and its related reactions? ›

That process of chemical digestion and its related reactions is called metabolism. Metabolism is the total of all the chemical reactions an organism needs to survive.

How many types of chemicals reactions are there? ›

This becomes much easier for students to do when they learn the pattern of 5 basic categories of chemical reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion.

What is all the chemical reactions in an organism that support life? ›

metabolism (adj. metabolic) The set of life-sustaining chemical reactions that take place inside cells and bigger structures, such as organs. These reactions enable organisms to grow, reproduce, move and otherwise respond to their environments.
